What is Roofscaping?

By Geoff Iles One often forgotten area of landscape design is coming under renewed focus with the introduction of a new design concept to Australia known as Roofscaping. Simply put Roofscaping involves the introduction of design elements onto rooftops being created in urban developments. The trend towards medium and high density urban living shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Many urban developments are built without giving consideration to the need Australians have to stay in touch with the fun of outdoor living. Another important factor is that whilst many people need the access to the employment opportunities and services the big cities provide they do not want to lose touch with being part of our natural environment. This is where the Roofscaping concept originated from. Recently at Mirvacs Yarras Edge Apartment project in Melbournes Docklands precinct Roofscaping was introduced into the overall design. The 6th floor Podium Level design was done by Edaw Pty Ltd and incorporates hardy plants with decorative recycled glass and pebble paths from Melbourne based company DcoR Pebble. The beautiful area can be seen from many areas of the development and makes a wonderful departure from the traditionally drab and uninteresting roofs in most apartment developments. Another project currently in the planning stage, EJE Group, is the Hunters Wharf Project in Sydney. The project design uses an outline of the Parramatta River made entirely by using DcoR Glass and DcoR Pebble products. Geoff Iles owner of DcoR Pebble believes imagination is the only limit to what can be done with urban rooftop spaces. DcoR Glass and DcoR Pebble provide ideal light weight permanent coloured aggregate for use in the greenscaping of urban high-rise roof decks. The 5-10mm glass & pebble aggregates can be loose laid or mixed with an adhesive epoxy or acrylic resin to permanently hold them in place. The application is usually carried out at a thickness between 20-30mm over the drainage system. The coverage rate of a 5-10mm aggregate is approx. 20kg per M2 @ 10mm depth. Whilst the Dcor Pebble range of manufactured aggregates offer a more cost efficient product, the 36 colours of crushed recycled Dcor Glass aggregates offers designers a greater range of vibrant and soft colours to choose from. The coloured recycled glass is becoming increasingly popular with environmentally conscious designers. Power and the Doctor

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Tate] Peter Tate Patients expect and often want powerful doctors; that is a doctor who has reassuring authority, who is apparently capable and whose pronouncements can reduce anxiety. One definition of medical or ‘Aesculapean’ authority divides it into three parts: Sapiential, Moral and Charismatic. These words are somewhat off putting at first meeting but bear with me. Sapiential authority This can be defined as the right to be heard based on knowledge or expertise, and means doctors must know or at least appear to know more about medicine than their patients. This can only be one part of the doctor’s authority, however, as a biochemist may know more about a particular branch of medicine, but it is to a physician that a patient turns when in need. Moral authority This is the right to significantly control and direct patients, based on doing what society expects of them as doctors. To keep their moral authority, doctors must always act with the good of the patient as their paramount concern. This is derived from the Hippocratic credo. In addition, societies generally revere doctors, meaning that their behaviour is seen as socially right as well as individually good. This is a powerful combination. Charismatic authority This is the most difficult of the three concepts, and is similar to the anthropological definition of magic. It stems from the original unity between medicine and religion. In Western culture it related to the possibility of death, and the magnitude of the issues with which the doctor deals. Many of us want doctors to be a little magical. It is true too that for many of us there is a need to supplement sapiential and moral authority with an ineffable factor, which might just hold out hope against the odds. Many doctors go out of their way to cultivate this. They develop a priestly mien, use complicated and obscure rituals, and act more like bishops than physicians. The three forms of authority are present in all doctors: though some doctors go out of their way to develop particular sapiential, moral and charismatic elements in their behaviour with patients and others. Think about some of the powerful doctors you have met and the nature of their power. Here is an example. A partially patient centred doctor has the same moral authority as her doctor centred colleague, but she may reduce some of her sapiential authority by sharing more information with her patients. This highlights a fundamental truth: Controlling information by the doctor increases their power and restricts our involvement in decisions about our health. Many doctors become very uneasy with knowledgeable inquisitive patients; such patients lessen the doctor’s control. The partially patient centred doctor will also be more likely to attempt to demystify the nature of medical diagnosis and treatment, reducing her charismatic authority and so her power to control the interview. This requires a degree of bravery in the doctor particularly when first trying such strategies. Most doctors, and perhaps especially when training, are afraid of losing control, of exposing too much of their patient’s pain and fear. They find themselves not asking the important question in case of opening an emotional Pandora’s Box and being overwhelmed. They use their power over their patient to keep the box shut and emotions at a non-threatening level. This style of behaviour can then become fixed and persist throughout a doctors career. Doctors can increase their charismatic power, should they wish, in many ways. The trappings of power are the most obvious, white coats, impressive mysterious gadgetry, attached (subservient) staff, large desks with the big chair firmly behind it. They surround themselves with grandiose looking certificates on the wall, and have computers with unintelligible displays or pointing away from us patients. They can communicate by cryptic oracle like pronouncements, shrouded in medico speak. This can then be wrapped up with dire warnings of the fearsome effects of not following the treatment properly, in order to complete the effect. Powerful rituals such as examining and prescribing are more charismatic in the absence of adequate explanations. The problem with these contrived exercises of medical authority is that the overwhelming evidence suggests they are not very effective. It quite obviously does not increase our understanding because that is not what is motivating the doctor. Doctors usually say that the reason for this style of communication is that it will make patients do what is good for them. However the sad fact seems to be that more often than not we don’t. The literature on compliance or what is now more hopefully called concordance with medical advice reflects rather badly on doctors, and us patients too if you think about it. Of course we are all just human beings, patients and surprising as it may seem, doctors too. Peter Tate qualified as a doctor at Newcastle in 1968. After spells as a P&O Surgeon and as a trainee in Kentish Town he was a family doctor for 30 years. He was an MRCGP examiner from 1981; he retired as convenor of the panel of examiners in March 2006. He is the sole author of The Doctors Communication Handbook now in its 5th edition. He is also the author of The Other Side of Medicine, a collection of essays and short stories. He has also recently published Seasickness, a novel based on his experiences as a young ships surgeon. He was a co author of The Consultation and The New Consultation OUP. Starting Your Diet Plan

By Janice Kaszursky Usually we decide to change our eating habits and lose weight when we discover we can no longer fit into our dresses or shorts. Or we’ve been told by our doctor that we have “fitness issues” and high cholesterol and threatened that unless we lose weight we’ll begin to have health problems. Other times we simply realize the fact that we are overweight and decide that we have to lose the weight the same way we gained it - by changing our eating habits. We’re going to have to bite the bullet, even if it means eating bean sprouts and celery. Sure it’s possible to lose weight by exercising alone, but let’s face it, we know we’re lazy and are not going to embark on any 60 day marathon exercise program. So we instead decide that we’re just going to have to change our eating habits. Now most of the time when we go on a diet, we do it by limiting our food intake. We count the number of calories we eat, we count the number of fat grams we eat, we count the carbohydrates we eat, and so on. My favorite method is changing my diet from high-calorie to low-calorie foods, but eating twice as much of it. Somehow, my approach rarely seems to work. Diet Program Comparisons There are quite a few web sites you can go to and find reams of information on dieting and losing weight. You’ll of course discover that not all diets work the same for everybody. Some diets will work better for you and some will work better for me. The Atkins diet - this requires a drastic cut in carbohydrates, which is definitely not an option for me. I just love pasta way too much. The South Beach Diet - this is a popular diet to lose weight because it allows dieters to eat many of the foods they eat anyway and is not quite as restrictive as others. It’s the one that president Clinton was on. Weight loss systems - OK, these are programs such as Jenny Craig, the LA Weight Loss Center, or Curves for Women. Even though all these programs are pretty good, they all require exercise, which I’m just not ready to commit to at this point. But if you’re willing to exercise, these may be for you. The most important thing to do before you decide to go on any drastic weight loss plan is to consult your doctor or dietician and get their feedback on your plan. This is especially true if you are elderly or have major health concerns that could be impacted by dietary changes. Janice Kaszursky is a writer for hoodia-diet-info.com. 3 Tips To Get Rid Of Love Handles

By George Spence So what about those love handles huh? Why on earth do we call them that? Nobody loves a love handle, well most of us dont . They are just like a bad smell which seem to linger on! The bad news is this. If anyone tells you they have a quick way of getting rid of love handles.DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! It is not that easy. There are no rapid quick fire ways to get rid of love handles. And in the majority of cases, spot toning does not work either. But there is hope. Certain changes in the way you exercise and the way you run your life can do one heck of a lot to ridding yourself of the spare tire. Here are s few suggestions to get you started Surgery. OK. Dont panic. I mean Liposuction. It may seem a little drastic and it is not for everyone but if you have seriously tried just about everything else out there, liposuction is the last resort. I would go as far to suggest that it maybe the key if you are 10 to 25 kilos overweight and it is all in the midrift area which wont seem to reduce in size, even though the rest of your body has slimmed down. Liposuction will improve your contours but you wont see much weight loss even though the fat is sucked away from the problem area during the liposuction procedure. As always, before considering this option you will need to consult with your doctor Make your back stronger Sit ups and crunches will only do so much on there own without working on your lower back with specific exercises. This will increase the overall muscle in your midsection, which will lead to less fat, which leads to much smaller love handles. I can suggest one drill which will make a difference: As you lie on your stomach, elevate your knees and feet and flutter kick your legs as if you were swimming on dry land. You should do this for 15 20 seconds, rest for 30 40 seconds and then repeat once more. Cut down on your Salt intake. Nowadays, we all know that too much salt in our foods is not beneficial at all. It is also a good friend of the love handles. Why? Because too much salt can lead to water retention, especially around the tummy area and will make your handles seem like super love handles. This is an easy step to follow as reducing your salt (sodium as it is also known) can lead to a much healthier you! Trying to get rid of Love Handles? There are many easy ways to do this so how do you decide what is for you? Test Anxiety

By Eddie Tobey Although it is quite normal for most students to feel some level of stress and anxiety during examination days, yet in some cases where anxiety begins to hamper exam performance, it becomes a major hindrance. Test anxiety is caused due to many reasons, such as lack of preparation due to inappropriate time management, poor study habits, and inability to organize information. Along with that, constant peer and parental pressure to perform well and the dread of failure can wreck havoc in the lives of students. A fallout of this stress is Test Anxiety Disorder. Test anxiety may even infuse certain bodily changes in the students like perspiration, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, tension in the muscles, headache or sweaty palms. Test anxiety leads to mounting nervousness which distorts the reading, understanding, organizing, retrieving and answering as well as performance skills of the people. The only way to cope with it or combat it is by studying hard, learning and practicing on a regular basis and avoiding laziness, procrastination and day dreaming. One should learn to focus and concentrate on the material that is being read and should never forget to relax that is, take long deep breaths along with proper sleep or rest, so as to stay rejuvenated. There are certain means through which the power of concentration can be increased. The most effective ones are to choose the right environment where noise, interruption and distraction are at a minimum. Lighting, comfort, temperature and neatness must be properly maintained. Whenever confronted with test anxiety, one must try not to think about fear and be focussed about what one is supposed to do. One should try remaining relevant, relaxed, calm and composed. Imbibing a positive attitude can really work wonders and hasten the healing process of an individual. Some anxiety is normal and inevitable. One must learn to steadily cope with it and keep oneself distracted and busy. However, if it persists for a longer period of time, then seeking psychological help wouldn’t be a bad decision. The Health Benefits Of Peppermint As An Essential Oil

By Dulce Azogue Peppermint, also known as Mentha piperita, brandy mint, or lamb mint, is a popular herb that is used in the world of confectionery and alternative medicine. The plant, which is native to some parts in Europe and Asia, grows well in moist and shady places, and produces tiny, purple flowers that bloom from July to September. Peppermint as an herbal medicine is known for a variety of uses. Its active component, menthol, is responsible for its calming and soothing properties. Because of this, it can be used as an aid against symptoms of common cold and dry cough, as well as pharyngitis. When rubbed on the temples and forehead, its oil can help treat headaches. It can soothe the skin that is infected with poison ivy and hives. An anxious person can benefit from it by making a tea out of it as it can reduce mild anxiety. It may also help treat or cure toothaches, fever, and muscular pain. It is used to promote good digestion and to treat stomach upset, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual cramps, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea. Its antibacterial properties can inhibit the growth of herpes and other viruses. Lastly, peppermint may help treat gallstones. But aside from being a herbal plant, peppermint is also known as a flavoring in certain products like toothpaste, chewing gum, ice cream and teas. Peppermint is also used as an ingredient when making shampoos and soaps, as it leaves a cooling effect on the skin and scalp. Peppermint can be taken in tea, capsule, ointment, or cream form. Its leaves and flowers contain menthol, its active component, and are dried and steeped to make a tea out of it. Peppermint tea can be consumed to aid in digestion or to treat stomach upset. If you do not have the time to grow peppermint yourself, dont worry; peppermint tea is commercially available and can be bought in the market. Like all other herbal plants, precautionary care must be exercised when taking or using peppermint in any form due to the side effects that it might cause. To people with GERD, you must be wary about using or taking peppermint as it can trigger your condition by relaxing the sphincter. Ask your doctor for further advice. The same thing goes to people with gallbladder and liver problems. Other side effects include allergies, mouth swelling, hives, skin rashes, muscle tremors, and ulcerations. To pregnant mothers, consult your doctor to know if taking peppermint will cause harm to your unborn baby. When taking herbal supplements, it is very important to ask for a healthcare professionals advice because they are not closely evaluated and monitored by the FAD. Some other ingredients may have been used which may interact with the other drugs you are taking, and may cause harm and little-known side effects. How to Plan a Wedding in 10 Days… and Keep a Modest Budget

By Michele Neisler How long have you and your fiance been engaged? Are you tired of waiting for the big wedding day? You just can’t wait to be Mr. and Mrs. “fill in name of couple.” Well, wait no more! Here are seven tips on how to plan your wedding in just 10 short days. They are in no means in any particular order — just use your own common sense. 1. Borrow your wedding dress Are you the same dress size as another female family member or friend? Ask if you can wear their wedding dress in your wedding! Not only will you look fabulous, but you’ll already have your “something borrowed” for the tradition. Plus, if you borrow the dress from a family member, that will make the dress all the more special. Buy your garter and shoes at a wedding shop or even a craft supply store. You will have your “something new” and if you get a garter with a blue bow, there is your “something blue.” As for “something old,” borrow an item from a family member that has sentimental value. Take good care of it and give it right back after the wedding! 2. Make the invitations Obviously you will not have time to order invitations, so make them yourself! You can purchase wedding invitation paper at your local office supply store, most of them come with a template that you can load onto your hard drive. Then, you design the invitation on your computer using the actual facsimile of the invitation on your screen. The package will even include some regular paper to test your designs on before you print them. Buy mailing labels that you can print from the computer also. This will save a lot of time and probably prevent you from developing carpal tunnel syndrome in the meantime! 3. Talk to someone at the wedding venue Wherever you choose to have the wedding ceremony — a church, temple, non-denominational justice of the peace chambers — make sure you book the date and time you want/need for the wedding. If you need any special equipment, like a chupah (ceremonial canopy) for a Jewish wedding, make certain that it will be available. Ask about prices and see if you can cut a deal considering the short notice. 4. Book a house Finding it difficult to book a reception in so little time? Have it at a relative’s house. Chances are that you are getting married in one of your hometowns (if you don’t share the same one) or current place of residence. What better way to save money on a banquet hall than by having the reception at the home of someone you know? Just make sure that it is large enough to accommodate all of your guests, food, cake, music, and gifts. If you prefer, you can even have the wedding ceremony at the house, as well. 5. Find a wholesale florist Search for a local wholesale florist. Not only do they generally have many people working for them (meaning they can get large orders filled in little time), but since they get their supplies wholesale you will get a better price. Are you allergic to real flowers? Have them make fake bouquets. They can make them look just as beautiful and can even make them look real by adding effects (i.e., clear glue droplets made to look like water). 6. Plan the menu and do it yourself Not meaning cook everything yourself, but you can order deli, veggie and fruit trays and have someone pick them up and arrange them at the reception house during the ceremony. Buy bottles of soda on sale and big bags of ice. Use paper plates and cups and use plastic utensils and buy a fancy-looking vinyl tablecloth. This will also make the clean-up a lot easier for whoever ends up cleaning. They’ll thank you for it later. 7. Friends, friends, friends! Still need music, pictures, and a cake? Ask your friends! Even if none of your friends is a DJ/KJ, photographer, or baker, chances are they know some people who can cut you a deal. If you can’t afford a photographer, you probably have a friend who takes awesome pictures. Have them make the memories of your wedding. If there are family photos and such that you want, make sure you let them know. Get someone whom you know is famous for their goodies to make the cake. It may not be the five-tier cake that you dreamed about when you were ten, but it will be special just the same. If you are lucky, you have a friend who specializes in cake decorating who can build your five-tier dream. Use a small boom box for music at the ceremony and just have someone push the buttons. Make CD mixes of the songs you want in the order you want them. Supply the person with a list of what to play when and leave it to them. Have the same person bring the boom box to the reception house so that you can have your wedding party intros, first dance, etc. So there you have it. It takes some time, but think of all the hassles you will avoid by marrying so quickly. There will be no time to change your mind about anything, much less change it several times. Taking these seven tips to heart will allow you to have a hassle-free, moderate-budget wedding of your dreams! After struggling with her own wedding, Michele Neisler created Wedding Wisdom to educate future brides. No matter what your wedding related needs, Wedding Wisdom promises to create marriages between all members of the bridal community. Motorola Z3 RIZR Sleek, Elegant and Innovative

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Fallon_Seabrook]Fallon Seabrook There are few sleek, elegant mobile phones on the market that manage to provide a great range of capabilities besides great looks, but the Motorola Z3 RIZR is one of them. Motorola Z3 RIZR is a slide mobile phone with an excellent stylish aspect, and these are just some of the reasons why it is gaining more and more popularity. This Motorola Z3 RIZR phone, which is targeted to the European, US and Asian market, is the first one from the RAZR series that comes with a slide handset. The slider and the sliding system have received nothing but great reviews until now, basically because all it takes is a delicate push. The actual design of the phone is quite minimalistic, considering its textured black surface, flat appearance and soft edges. The RIZR is a phone that weighs 111 grams and measures 105 x 45 x 17 mm - dimensions which were considered a bit large for the Asian market, even if we are talking about a slide phone. Still, based on these measurements, the Motorola mobile phone seems solid and well structured and it can be easily carried and handled. In addition, the phone presents a unique combination between metal and rubber, for pleasant tactile sensations. Among the basic features of the Motorola Z3 RIZR phone, there is the 2 megapixel camera, Stereo Bluetooth, Quad-Band (GPRS/EDGE), USB 2.0, LCD displaying with 262K-colors and a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Talking about the multimedia features, this phone presents a full screen viewfinder, fixed lens, frame centre, video capture capability and playback support. Motorola Z3 RIZR supports a wide range of formats if you want to listen to music: MP3, AAC, AAC+ or eAAC+. and it also includes A2DP music support which can be used with certain stereo headphones. Even though the multimedia capabilities are quite varied and the display is among the best in this price range, Motorola Z3 RIZR does not seem to provide the best quality of pictures. Still, with its one of a kind design, long battery life and great texture, and considering the fact that it is the first slider of the RAZR series, the Motorola Z3 RIZR makes a great choice, especially for customers in search of an elegant mobile device. Get Finance Of Low Rate By Secured Home Improvement Loan

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dina_Wilson]Dina Wilson Your home badly needs various improvement works so that you can add modern facilities and also decorate it. But funds are hard to find. All those works now can be done almost instantly when you decide to take secured home improvement loan. One can utilize secured home improvement loan for various purposes like addition of bathroom and kitchen or new rooms, plumbing or roofing, painting, redecoration, refurnishing, adding a storey to the house. These home improvements result in a surge of your homes capital value. Being a secured loan, borrowers are required to furnish collateral to the loan provider. The collateral may consist of any of the borrowers property such as home, bank account etc. Lenders get a sense of security about the loaned amount when they are offered collateral. In fact collateral plays a vital role in deciding over higher loan and the interest rate on it. Normally lenders provide up to 250000 to the borrowers as secured home improvement loan. In the instances where greater loan is required, lender will see the equity in the collateral. Higher equity will enable borrower to take greater amount as the loan. One can repay secured home improvement loan in the duration that suits him well as the loan is provided for 5 to 25 years. But the repayment term should be chosen carefully. You would not like to carry the loan burden for larger duration but at the same time monthly installments will be easier. Availing the loan for shorter term may help you clear the debt early but monthly installments will be higher and the interest rate may also be a bit higher. So chose the repayment term keeping in mind your financial position. [http://www.online-home-improvement-loan.co.uk/secured_loan_improvement_loan_uk.html]Secured Home Improvement Loan comes cheaper at lower interest rate. However, borrowers should make efforts to avail at further lowered rate by comparing different loan packages that are offered by loan providers online. Borrowers having bad credit history also take secured home improvement loan, though they may face a slight disadvantage in higher interest rate.
